Top 10 Misconceptions About Dog Health and Care

1. Nothing needs to be done with a small wound on the dog’s body – it will lick it.

In fact, the dog’s oral cavity is a breeding ground for germs, and if she licks the wound herself, this will increase the risk of suppuration and delay healing at least twice. In such cases, the wound should be treated, and a protective collar should be put on the dog to prevent licking.

2. The dosage of anthelmintic drugs depends on the age of the dog.

In fact, it depends only on weight.

3. The smell from the dog’s mouth is normal because it doesn’t brush its teeth.

Firstly, a dog can and even needs to brush his teeth – for this, special brushes are sold. Secondly, the smell can indicate various diseases (caries, tartar, sometimes gastritis). If the smell from the mouth is combined with other deviations in health, even small ones, it is better to consult a veterinarian. Continue reading

The choice of a puppy for psychological qualities

So, you have weighed the pros and cons, and decided to get a little puppy. You feel the need to track its growth and development, “fashioning” your future friend day after day. But how to recognize among the tiny living lumps of someone who will become a welcome pet, and will not bring many disappointments into your life? How to choose a puppy so that subsequently you do not regret what you did?

The first step towards finding your dream dog is a thorough analysis and selection of the breed, taking into account their advantages and disadvantages. Assume also that you have decided on the gender of your dog. And now, having already a fairly clear idea of the baby, think again: how do you see the future of your dog?

Choosing owners for my puppies, I noticed that potential buyers are primarily interested in their appearance. The least familiar with the standards opt for the largest and plump kid; the most sophisticated – try to acquire the most pedigree puppy. Continue reading

Puppy testing

The most complete information regarding the personality characteristics of puppies can be obtained as a result of special tests. Babies aged 6 to 8 weeks can be objectively checked for fear of loud sounds, pain threshold, nervousness, dominance, the presence or absence of hunting and protective instincts.

For testing puppies, dog breeders recommend using the Campbell comprehensive test, which allows you to fairly accurately identify the characteristics of the dog’s psyche even at such a young age and give advice on the suitability of the animal for certain activities. The tests are carried out in a quiet unfamiliar place, so that nothing distracts the puppies. The person conducting the test should follow the prescribed actions very accurately, while carefully observing the babies, but stroking and talking with them is prohibited. The test consists of 5 points. Continue reading

The correspondence between the dog and the owner

Choosing a Healthy Puppy It is known that many dogs amazingly accurately mimic the characteristics of their owners. Sometimes even the physical resemblance can be so incredible that it causes bewilderment. Even more powerful is the identity of personality characteristics.

For example, fans of German shepherds are mostly physically active and vociferous; Rottweilers – stubborn and purposeful; Airedale terriers are cheerful and a bit sarcastic. If the choice of the breed and its representative separately is not accidental, then close relations and mutual attraction soon arise between the person and the animal. Most dogs can perform several functions; however, it makes sense to choose the puppy that best suits its purpose. Continue reading

Choosing a Healthy Puppy

Healthy puppies are active, energetic, playful and cheerful. At first glance, they are all fluffy little buns that you want to caress. The size and weight of puppies depends on the number of babies in the litter, but to a greater extent on the proper care and feeding. Keep in mind that a healthy large breed puppy at the age of 30 days must weigh at least 2.5 kg, and at two months of age – at least 6 kg. He should not be either fat or thin, but rather – downed and strong. In all cases, the features of the exterior and temperament must correspond to the breed type.

It is quite simple to distinguish a seriously ill puppy: boring, watery eyes, dry nose, ruffled hair, sunken or, conversely, swollen tummy, weakness of the extremities. The unfortunate baby is lying all the time, trying to get into a secluded dark place, whimpers or groans. He may have vomiting and diarrhea, a staggering or hunched gait. Ask the breeder to feed the babies in your presence – the sick puppy will refuse food. Naturally, taking such a puppy is not recommended. Continue reading
