Friend from the shelter

Do not believe myths. If you want to get a cat or a dog, do not rush to ring up nurseries, pay money for an elite pet. At a homeless animal shelter, a trusted friend can be borrowed for free.

Most of our shelters are private, not public. In groups on social networks and on their websites, they always upload photos of wards, reports on financial matters, home pictures attached to the lucky good hands. Anyone can learn all about a shelter, come on a guest day, get to know the animals, play with them, and provide all possible assistance to the shelter staff. Too many caring people do just that. But, unfortunately, some of these pets for some reason cause negative associations. It’s time to fix it, dispel the most common myths.

Cats and dogs from the shelter are wild.

The friend from the shelter Negative moments are never hidden from potential hosts. On the contrary, you will not be offered an aggressive and asocial animal, since zoopsychologists and dog handlers have yet to work with it.

In any case, you will need time to get used to each other. Do not doubt that affection, love and patience will certainly bear fruit. Former street animals can also be obedient and picky, unless you spoil them yourself.

Shelter animals always get sick with something.

All animals entering the shelter must be vaccinated, treated for worms and fleas. After that, the cat or dog is quarantined. Only when specialists are sure that the animal is healthy, it gets into the box, aviary or common room. Any shelter has the closest connection with a veterinary clinic. It’s no secret that pets often get here after various injuries. But the volunteers will certainly tell you about it, since it is not in their interests to hide or under-report something.

It is better to take a kitten or puppy than an adult animal.

It is generally accepted that older dogs and cats do not adapt well to new owners. This is not true. Having passed the street, the animal will quickly get used to the habits and daily routine of any person. Just because the fear of being unnecessary again is still too strong. However, you can take and kids – there is always a large selection of animals of any age.

There are no purebred cats and dogs in shelters.

Pleasant appearance, like the presence of a pedigree, does not at all determine a happy fate. Throw not only mutts onto the street. In the shelter you can find poodles, terriers, Labradors, shepherd dogs, collies, even Yorks. The reasons may be different: death of the previous owner, moving, divorce, severe illness of someone at home, allergies to animals, etc. Therefore, if you want to have a pet of a particular breed, look for its representatives in shelters. It is clear that no one will give you documents for exhibitions, and this also needs to be taken into account.

What if the animal does not adapt?

There is always a trial period in shelters – a month or two weeks. It is provided for insurmountable obstacles. For safety, it is better to decide in advance which animal you want. Important parameters are breed, age, gender, character. In the shelter you will be prompted with possible options, try to find a dog or cat to your liking.

Will have to collect a lot of documents.

In fact, a passport is enough to conclude a contract. Naturally, you will be asked questions about housing conditions and family composition. But additional certificates, like in the USA or in Europe, will not have to be collected.
