The choice of a puppy for psychological qualities
So, you have weighed the pros and cons, and decided to get a little puppy. You feel the need to track its growth and development, “fashioning” your future friend day after day. But how to recognize among the tiny living lumps of someone who will become a welcome pet, and will not bring many disappointments into your life? How to choose a puppy so that subsequently you do not regret what you did?
The first step towards finding your dream dog is a thorough analysis and selection of the breed, taking into account their advantages and disadvantages. Assume also that you have decided on the gender of your dog. And now, having already a fairly clear idea of the baby, think again: how do you see the future of your dog?
Choosing owners for my puppies, I noticed that potential buyers are primarily interested in their appearance. The least familiar with the standards opt for the largest and plump kid; the most sophisticated – try to acquire the most pedigree puppy.
If you want to shine in the show ring, then you can not do without the help of a specialist who knows the nuances of this breed and leading manufacturers. If your goal is an exhibition career, then the choice of a puppy should focus on the leading characteristics of the exterior. Read the literature, learn the standards, go to exhibitions, look at the prize-winning dogs.
A great prospect is to get a puppy from “star” parents. When choosing such a dog, you should carefully study its physical data, especially such as the color and structure of the coat, ears set, bite, head proportions, proper positioning of the limbs and tail. All these features of the exterior can be distinguished even in one and a half month old puppies. A specialist in this breed will easily point out the flaws and shortcomings of each puppy and highlight its advantages.
It is well known that even the most promising puppy can be “ruined” by improper feeding and maintenance, but it is impossible to get a ring star from an unpromising animal. Well-known ancestral winners are absolutely necessary if you want to seriously engage in breeding for the sake of improving the breed. At the same time, I emphasize that the future champion dog should combine not only the “gold of the gene pool” of this breed, but also excellent external data combined with a proper character. Cowardice, aggressiveness and excessive nervousness significantly complicate the exposure of the dog and do not allow it to open in the show ring in all its glory. Psychological problems, manifested by undesirable behavior in front of an expert, can lead to disqualification of even the pedigree dog.
If your goal is to raise a working dog and purposefully train it to protect a person and his property, then when choosing you need to focus on the strength of the puppy’s temperament. Finally, if you just need a four-legged friend, then the determining factor may be just a feeling of mutual sympathy and goodwill. Many follow the unspoken rule: “Whoever comes to me is mine” —that is, a person takes for himself the very puppy that reaches out and runs towards him. Professionals reject the mystical mutual attraction, insisting that you should not choose the dog, but you.
Choosing a puppy by psychological qualities In any case, looking for a suitable puppy, do not spare time. Do not take the first doggie you get – look for the best. At the same time, evaluate not only the dogs, but also their owner. Remember that if you get a puppy from a responsible breeder, then the chances of acquiring a healthy and self-confident animal are quite high. Rely on the help of dog handlers and trainers. Ask, compare, evaluate. You may need to talk to a dozen people before you find what you need.
I want to give some recommendations when choosing a dog designed to perform a specific job. For example, the antisocial watchdogs, who are assigned the functions of independent protection of the land or home, differ significantly in their psychological qualities from the dogs that were selected to patrol the territory along with the human guard. And the guarded dog-bodyguards used to protect and protect a person cannot compare with the good-natured four-legged companions and family favorites.
A puppy is born with a certain temperament, the strength of which is understood as assertiveness, stubbornness, the ability to stand up for oneself and impose one’s will on a person. This set of psychological characteristics is individual for each dog; therefore, trainers call it “personal qualities”. It is believed that the strength of temperament practically does not change with the age of the animal. That is why not every dog is capable of fulfilling the functions assigned to it and become your ideal.
Before making a choice, watch the puppies for a while. The owner of a mother-bitch (breeder) is an excellent source of information, but on condition that he is an expert in dog psychology and is interested in the fate of his charges.
