You got a puppy
And then the baby found himself in your house. He faces a difficult task – to grow into a healthy, obedient and efficient dog. And it is you who should help in this – the owner, tutor, teacher, defender, doctor and friend. The growing up of a dog under your constant control can be compared to the work of a sculptor, who carves a magnificent statue from marble. And you need to start this work as early as possible. Better – from the first days of the appearance of a puppy in your home. The results of your joint efforts will not slow down to manifest. You will see, day after day, how your four-legged friend grows, becoming bigger, stronger, smarter and more and more attached to you.
Remember: a puppy should not be taken outside until the entire vaccination complex has been given to it (see “Caring for the puppy’s health”). Take him to the room that is specially prepared for the new tenant. As a rule, as soon as the baby is put on the floor, the first thing he “marks” by letting a puddle. Then he continues the ritual of acquaintance with the new territory, necessary for all animals. At these moments, the baby’s brain does an unprecedented amount of work, processing a huge amount of unfamiliar odors, sounds and visual images. Do not bother him, wait until he gets a little comfortable.
The first time a puppy is fed when he is already a little accustomed to the house and calm down. During the first weeks, try to maintain the usual diet that the puppy received with his mother. New products should be introduced gradually and in small portions, strictly monitoring how the baby’s digestive system responds to unfamiliar food (see. “Feeding”).
You have a puppy Take care of toys for the baby in advance. Pet shops offer a wide range of balls and rings made of molded rubber, funny squeaking “hedgehogs” and “dumbbells”, as well as all kinds of latex toys that are difficult to crack and do not tear when stretched. There is fun in the form of a bundle of rubber “sausages” on a tight rope, there are “bones” made from bovine veins or specially treated leather, dried pork ears and calf legs; there are “flying saucers” that dogs so love to jump after. Buy your baby a few different toys and make a choice, relying entirely on his taste. Remember, the diameter of the balls should not be less than 5 cm to avoid swallowing!
In general, it is precisely those things that the puppy plays with that he wants to swallow. And everything that can be swallowed is fraught with danger. Therefore, it is better to give the puppy the safest toys, especially if you cannot provide constant control. As such fun, you can offer a large raw beef bone (without splinters!), A piece of tarpaulin twisted and pulled into a “sausage”, a large apple or carrot. If the baby is not provided with such toys, then he will arrange a hunt for your legs, will gnaw on furniture, spoil the wallpaper and generally have fun at his own discretion.
Allowing you to play with old house slippers, you thus give the go-ahead for the destruction of new shoes, because the smell of shoes is common – “foot”. Do not give your puppy leather goods with thickenings and knots at the edges – he can immediately swallow a large piece that gets stuck in the throat or into the intestines, causing obstruction. Replace natural beef bones every 2–3 days to avoid infection.
The little puppy sleeps a lot. Sleep is as important to him as food and play. However, it is very difficult to teach a baby to sleep alone, only in its own specially designated place. Some dog handlers recommend that the first night categorically send the puppy to a pre-prepared mattress. However, remember that the dog is a social being, therefore loneliness is unnatural for her.
Experienced dog breeders know that for a puppy, the first night in a new house most often goes uneasily. That is why it is better not to drive the baby out of the room where the owner is sleeping. Most likely, a freshly baked tenant, having already become attached to you in a few hours, will lie near your bed, so that if necessary, you can quickly calm the baby, stroke him by hand, making him feel the desired warmth. Left alone, a puppy can express his insecurity, anxiety and fear with a whimper, a thin yelp, scratching a closed door, and if these methods do not help, he starts whining, invitingly barking or raising his face up and howling like a wolf cub. If the dog started a “night concert”, being locked in the kitchen, then after some time the owner’s patience will end and he will be forced to take the troublemaker to the room. However, in this situation, the puppy put forward a demand and achieved his goal, and (be sure!) He will remember this.
Instilling house rules is a long process. But don’t be a tyrant! It may take several weeks to develop a habit of “place”. When the baby, having played enough, falls asleep in the middle of the room, do not wake him, but carefully lift him up and take him to his place, quietly saying: “Place! Good place. ”
